Knowing when to purchase a flue guard

In the middle of getting a new boiler installed, or perhaps redecorating? You might be thinking it's a good time to move your boiler, which leads to the question of whether you should move your flue as well. Whether you're a professional looking for a familiar flue guard for the job or you're buying one for the first time, you'll need to have a flue terminal guard in place when:

  • Hot air has to leave a building safely
  • You need to prevent debris from gathering around a flue
  • You have to avoid by-products from a flue being directed at a neighbour's property

Remember that it is mainly water vapour and carbon dioxide emitted from boilers. Due to how they're positioned, the heat coming out, and the risk of carbon monoxide (if a boiler is faulty), a terminal guard is essential.

Different types of Flue Guard available at BES

We offer stainless steel, mild steel, and plastic-coated flue terminal guards. Please note that if your flue is for an oil boiler system, you're best to opt for stainless steel guards.

You'll also want to consider the flue guard's shape. Our range includes rectangular, circular, and high-level terminal guards (including those with cut-outs).

Knowing the requirements for flue guard installation

Terminal flue guard installation will vary based on the location and type of flue you're working with. For example, a typical flue you see from the side or back of a house will need to be 2m off the ground and at least 300mm away from any opening (that's before factoring in other pipework). Flues on roofs need to be a minimum of 600mm above the roof and sometimes covered at the base. There is a lot which dictates which guard to get. If you're unsure what requirements to follow, we highly recommend contacting a professional, so you don't make a costly mistake.

Flue guards in a range of sizes

Our terminal guards range in size from 255mm by 115mm to 508mm by 508mm. If you are familiar with guards, you can filter by size on the side menu. Every terminal guard will also list the standards the product guard meets, along with the depth, diameter, and material.
