Gas Purging Equipment Available at BES

Our range offers equipment designed to help engineers safely remove air from new installations, discharge gas during maintenance or verify pipework integrity before commissioning.

Purge Units

Our selection of gas purge units and fan purge units is designed to support controlled gas-to-air purging during installation and system maintenance. Fan-assisted units are especially useful when working with larger diameter pipes or higher gas volumes, where additional airflow helps speed up the purging process. Our range includes units suited to common pipe sizes, such as 100mm, 150mm (including a 150mm 110V option), and 200mm, making them appropriate for many commercial gas pipework applications.

Purge Assemblies and Flexible Hoses

Our range of reinforced clear flexible purge hoses enables engineers to connect purge units safely to pipework and direct discharge away from the work area. At BES, we stock purge assemblies in several common configurations, including: 1/2" BSP, 3/4" BSP, 1" BSP and 2" BSP connections.

Flame Arrestors

BES supplies end-of-line flame arrestor traps designed for use during gas purging procedures. These are typically fitted at the outlet of purge hoses to help reduce the risk of flame travelling back into the pipework. Our range includes several common sizes: 1/2" BSP, 3/4" BSP, 1" BSP and 2" BSP.

IGEM Purging and Testing Certificates

Alongside purging equipment, BES also supplies a selection of gas testing and purging certificates used by engineers to record testing procedures. Available documentation includes certificates for: tightness testing, strength testing, and direct purging procedures.

Gas Detectors

To support safe working during purging and testing procedures, we also stock portable gas detectors suitable for identifying gases such as propane and butane. The GMI Gascoseeker 2-500 Butane Detector and GMI Gascoseeker 2-500 Propane Detector are commonly used by engineers to detect gas presence during testing, monitor gas levels during purging, and confirm when pipework has been safely cleared.

Continuity Bonds

Temporary continuity bonds are commonly used when working on gas pipework to maintain electrical continuity across pipe sections during installation or maintenance. Our range includes crocodile clip continuity bonds and temporary bonding chains.

Loose Unions and Purging Connections

To assist in assembling purge systems, BES also stocks loose hose unions and connection fittings compatible with common purge hose sizes. These fittings allow engineers to securely connect purge hoses and assemblies to gas pipework or purge equipment. Options are available for 1/2", 3/4" and 1" bore hoses, supporting flexible purge system setups.

Purging Meters

We also supply diaphragm purging meters, used to measure gas flow during purging procedures. These meters assist engineers in monitoring gas movement during commissioning and testing tasks where controlled purging is necessary.

Choosing The Right Gas Purging Equipment

Choosing the appropriate purging equipment usually depends on factors such as pipe diameter, gas type (natural gas, propane, or butane), pipework volume, and distance to a safe discharge point. For instance, larger diameter pipework may require fan purge units and wider purge hoses, whereas smaller installations might only need a compact purge unit and shorter hose assembly. Where purge discharge points must be positioned further from buildings or ignition sources, a longer purge hose may be required to safely vent gas.

Gas work should always be carried out by appropriately qualified professionals. Work on gas installations should be undertaken by a Gas Safe-registered engineer.

FAQs

What is gas purging used for?

Gas purging is used to remove air from gas pipework before commissioning or safely remove gas from systems during maintenance or alterations. This helps prevent the formation of combustible gas-air mixtures inside pipework.

When should a fan purge unit be used?

Fan purge units are typically used for larger pipe volumes or commercial gas installations, where increased airflow helps move gas through the system more efficiently during purging.

What length purge hose should I choose?

Shorter hoses, such as 6 metre assemblies, are often suitable when the discharge point is nearby. 10 metre hoses may be required when gas must be vented further away from buildings, structures, or potential ignition sources.

Why are flame arresters used during gas purging?

Flame arresters help prevent flames or sparks travelling back through purge hoses into gas pipework, providing an additional safety measure during purging procedures.

What are IGEM gas testing certificates used for?

IGEM testing certificates are used by engineers to record tightness tests, strength tests, and purging procedures carried out during gas installation commissioning or inspection.

Do I need a gas detector when purging pipework?

Gas detectors are commonly used during purging to monitor gas levels and confirm when gas has been safely removed from pipework or work areas.
