Available in brass and DZR, with compression, BSP threaded and press-fit M profile connections, the range covers common domestic and commercial plumbing requirements in sizes from 15mm up to 4" BSP.
Single check valves, also known as non-return valves, allow water to flow in one direction only. They’re commonly used within systems to prevent back siphonage or reverse circulation. Our selection includes 90°C and 110°C BSP threaded options, spring-loaded compression types (15mm, 22mm, 28mm) and Press-fit M profile single check valves in DZR.
Best suited for preventing contamination, especially in systems where disinfectants are used or you rely on hot water, double check valves will be needed if you’re working with a Fluid Category 3 system. Our options include compression DZR valves (15mm & 22mm), BSP threaded versions, Press-fit M profile variants (15mm, 22mm & 28mm) and isolation valve combinations for easier servicing.
Great when dealing with upward flows, a reliable swing check valve utilises the weight of the disc inside to block reverse flows. They are generally installed in horizontal pipe runs and are often used on larger bore systems. The BES range includes brass BSP swing check valves from 3/8" up to 4", with popular options being Water Swing Check Valve - Brass 2.1/2" BSP and Water Swing Check Valve - Brass 2" BSP.
A single check valve contains one internal mechanism to prevent reverse flow. A double check valve contains two, offering greater protection where water contamination risk is higher. For the likes of your washing machine or shower, a single check valve should do the job, as they simply rely on a one-way system to prevent water from re-entering a system. For something like your garden tap, a double check valve is ideal in the event of negative water pressure after use.
Always refer to the Water Supply (Water Fittings) Regulations guidance when selecting backflow protection.
While both have the same function, and some people use the terms interchangeably, there are some slight differences to be aware of. Check valves will check/block water coming back through with a hinge system. Backflows use pressure to prevent water returning.
Check valves can be used in everything from home heating to the garden tap. If you’re shopping for a replacement check valve for domestic works and aren’t sure which valve to get, get in touch, and we may be able to help.
Correct installation is key to performance. Some valves are suitable for horizontal and vertical fitting, while swing check valves are generally installed horizontally to ensure proper disc operation.
Ensure flow direction matches the arrow marked on the valve body and that joints are made correctly for the connection type (compression, BSP or press-fit).
Remember that BES offers fast delivery on orders, with FREE delivery on qualifying orders. With over 50 years of experience, we help customers get valves and fittings at their door and ready for installation in no time.

What is a check valve used for?
A check valve prevents water from flowing back in the opposite direction, helping protect systems from contamination and pressure changes.
What is the difference between a single and a double check valve?
A single check valve contains one internal non-return mechanism. A double check valve contains two, offering greater protection where contamination risk is higher.
Can check valves be installed vertically?
Some spring-loaded check valves can be installed vertically, but swing check valves are typically installed horizontally. Always follow manufacturer guidance.
Do I need a double check valve for a garden tap?
In many cases, yes. Double check valves are commonly specified for outdoor taps to prevent backflow into the mains supply.
What does DZR mean?
DZR stands for dezincification-resistant brass, a material designed to improve durability in certain water conditions.
