Stainless Steel Press-Fit Fitting Types

Choose each fitting by its material grade, pipe outside diameter, application, seal type and required press-jaw profile. Most stainless steel water fittings in our selection use an M-profile pressing system, but not every press fitting listed is interchangeable.

Stainless Steel Press-Fit Elbows

Press-fit elbows provide a controlled change of direction without requiring the installer to bend the tube close to the joint. Our selection includes 90° elbows, 45° elbows, street elbows, plain-ended elbows, backplate elbows and threaded elbow adaptors. Popular choices include the 22 mm 304 stainless steel equal elbow and 15 mm 316L stainless steel street elbow.

We also offer threaded and backplate elbows, which are useful where the pipework must turn as it connects to a valve, outlet or fixed threaded component. Options include the 15 mm x 1/2" BSP female 304 stainless steel backplate elbow and 22 mm x 3/4" BSP taper male 316L elbow adaptor.

Stainless Steel Press-Fit Adaptors

Adaptors connect stainless steel press-fit tube to valves, equipment and existing threaded pipework. A product such as the 15 mm x 1/2" BSP male 304 stainless steel connector provides a transition from press-fit tube to a threaded port. Stainless Steel Press-Fit Tees

Press-fit tees create branches within a stainless-steel tube installation. Equal tees maintain the same pipe size through all three connections, while branch-reducing tees allow a smaller tube to be taken from the main run.

Products include the 15 mm 304 stainless steel equal tee and 22 mm 316L stainless steel equal tee. Reducing and threaded-branch tees are also available where the branch must change size or connect to a BSP component.

Straight Connectors And Unions

Straight connectors join stainless steel tube to a threaded valve, appliance or piece of equipment. Depending on the product, the threaded end may be male, female or fitted with a swivel nut to make alignment and future maintenance easier. Stainless Steel Reducers

Reducers allow the pipe size to change without introducing a separate threaded adaptor. They are useful where a larger distribution pipe feeds a smaller branch, terminal run or item of equipment. Reducing couplings have two press sockets and connect different tube outside diameters. Straight And Slip Couplers

Straight couplers join two tubes of the same outside diameter. They are suitable for extending a pipe run or introducing a permanent joint between two prepared tube ends. Top choices include the 54 mm 304 stainless steel straight coupling and 15 mm 316L stainless steel straight coupling.

Slip couplers do not have the same central tube stop as a conventional straight coupler. This allows the fitting to slide along the tube, making it particularly useful when repairing or replacing a section where the pipework cannot be moved apart. Products include the 15 mm 304 stainless steel slip coupling and 42 mm 316L stainless steel slip coupling.

Because a slip coupler may not contain a central stop, both final insertion positions must be measured and marked before the fitting is pressed.

Stainless Steel Press-Fit Ball Valves

Stainless steel ball valves provide local isolation within a press-fit pipework system. Their integral press connections reduce the number of separate adaptors required around the valve. Our range includes two-piece valves such as the 15 mm 316L stainless steel press-fit ball valve and three-piece designs such as the 22 mm 316L stainless steel press-fit ball valve.

Stainless Steel Crossovers

These allow one pipe run to pass around another without assembling several separate elbows. They can create a neater installation and reduce the number of press joints needed in closely spaced pipework. Full crossovers form a complete offset, while part crossovers provide a shallower change in level. Options include the 28 mm 304 stainless steel full crossover and 15 mm 316L stainless steel full crossover.

Stainless Steel End Caps And Stop Ends

End caps and stop ends close an unused tube end. They can be used when terminating a completed run, isolating a redundant branch or leaving a prepared connection for a later phase of work. Our selection includes options such as the 22 mm 304 stainless steel end cap and 15 mm 316L stainless steel end cap.  Pegler XPress stop ends are also available, including the 15 mm XPress stainless steel stop end.

Stainless Steel Flange Adaptors

Flange adaptors provide a transition from stainless steel press-fit tube to pumps, valves and equipment with compatible flanged connections. They can be useful in commercial plant rooms and larger mechanical-service installations where equipment must be removable. The 316L stainless steel range covers sizes including the 22 mm x 3/4" flange adaptor and 54 mm x 2" flange adaptor.

How Do Stainless Steel Press-Fit Fittings Work?

A stainless-steel press fitting contains a factory-installed sealing ring inside its socket. Once the prepared tube has been inserted to the specified depth, a powered press tool compresses the fitting around the tube, forming a permanent mechanical joint. Press-fit joints are generally not demountable or reusable. Once pressed, the fitting should be treated as a permanent component of the installation.

M-Profile Vs V-Profile Press Jaws

The 304 stainless steel, Alpha Press 316L and Pegler XPress stainless steel water fittings represented in our selection use M-profile press ends. Use a compatible press tool with the correct M-profile jaw, sling or collar for the fitting size.

Instantor R-Press refrigeration fittings use V-profile jaws and imperial sizes. They are designed for compatible copper refrigeration tube rather than the stainless-steel water tube used by the M-profile systems.

Before starting work, verify the fitting manufacturer and system, the tube material and outside diameter, the required jaw profile, and the compatibility of the press tool, jaw and fitting sizes.

304 Vs 316L Stainless Steel Press Fittings

Grade 304 offers good general corrosion resistance and is commonly selected for above-ground hot and cold water services, closed-circuit heating, and chilled-water applications in relatively mild environments. The suitability descriptions on our 304 product pages should still be checked for the individual fitting.

Grade 316L contains molybdenum, which improves resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion in chloride-bearing environments compared with grade 304. The low-carbon “L” grade is also widely used for fabricated and welded stainless-steel components. 316L may be preferred for more demanding potable-water, food-processing, healthcare, pharmaceutical, coastal or process applications where the complete fitting system is approved and chemically compatible. How To Install Stainless Steel Press-Fit Fittings

Always follow the instructions for the selected fitting system, tube and pressing equipment. A typical stainless-steel water press-fit installation follows these stages:

  1. Confirm compatibility. Check the tube material, outside diameter, fitting range, seal, jaw profile and system application.

  2. Cut the tube squarely. Use a suitable stainless steel tube cutter or fine-tooth saw that does not crush or distort the tube.

  3. Deburr the tube. Remove sharp internal and external edges that could damage the O-ring as the tube enters the fitting.

  4. Clean and inspect the tube end. Remove swarf, dirt, labels and adhesive residue. Check for deep scratches, deformation or contamination around the sealing area.

  5. Inspect the fitting and O-ring. Confirm that the sealing ring is present, clean, undamaged and correctly seated. Do not use a fitting with a displaced or damaged seal.

  6. Mark the insertion depth. Use the system manufacturer’s stated socket depth or marking tool. A visible mark helps confirm that the tube has remained fully inserted throughout pressing.

  7. Insert the tube fully. Push it squarely into the fitting until it reaches the internal stop. Do not force a misaligned tube into the socket.

  8. Press the joint. Position the correct jaw or sling squarely over the fitting bead and complete the full tool cycle.

  9. Inspect the pressed connection. Confirm that the insertion-depth mark remains adjacent to the fitting mouth and that the jaw has formed a complete, even press.

  10. Test the system. Carry out the pressure, strength and leak tests required by the system manufacturer and applicable installation specification before commissioning.

What tools are needed for stainless steel press-fit fittings?

You typically need a suitable tube cutter, internal and external deburring tools, an insertion-depth marker, a compatible powered press tool, and the correct jaw or sling for the fitting profile and size. The stainless-steel water ranges shown here use M-profile equipment, whereas Instantor R-Press refrigeration fittings use V-profile jaws.

Can I use a V-profile jaw on an M-profile fitting?

No. The jaw profile determines how the fitting is compressed. Use only the profile, tool and size approved for the selected fitting system.

What does Leak Before Press mean?

Leak Before Press is designed to reveal an unpressed fitting during the specified system test. It helps identify missed joints, but installers must still inspect every fitting and complete the required testing procedure.

Are stainless steel press-fit fittings suitable for drinking water?

Selected products are intended for potable-water systems and carry product-specific WRAS, Kiwa or other relevant approvals. Check the approval, permitted temperature range and installation conditions for the exact fitting and size rather than assuming that the entire category is approved.

What is the difference between 304 and 316L press fittings?

Grade 304 is suitable for many general plumbing, heating and chilled-water installations in mild environments. Grade 316L contains molybdenum and offers improved resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion in chloride-bearing conditions, although it is not immune to corrosion.

Can stainless steel press fittings be reused?

Most are non-demountable and non-reusable. Once pressed, they should be treated as permanent joints and replaced rather than removed and pressed again.
